The Pirates signed Poni as a draft-and-follow shortly before the 2003 draft and
assigned him to the GCL. He was completely overmatched by the pitching that year,
but made considerable progress in 2004, showing good doubles power. Like Kelington
Made, he caught only a few games and played mostly at 1B. He may be quite brutal
defensively; he committed 13 errors, easily the most on the team even though he
played in the field in only half the team's games. As with Made, he was old for
the level and can't be considered a prospect at this stage. He could be at either
Williamsport or Bradenton in 2005.
