Bonifay got a lot of attention with a huge 2002 season. He was actually Lynchburg's best hitter in 2001, but the team returned him to that level in the hope that he could improve his defense at 2B—he had been moved to LF in 2001. They eventually concluded he couldn't handle the position and shifted him back to LF late in the year. He ended up leading the league in HRs and RBIs. He didn't adjust well initially to AA. He started off 2003 hitting for good power but striking out in nearly 40% of his ABs. He must have cut down on his swing, as he reduced his K rate considerably around mid-season, but he also stopped hitting HRs. His walk rate was decent. He still hit a lot of doubles, so the power wasn't gone. He proved that in 2004, when he returned to Altoona and had a better season, hitting for solid power and getting on base at a good rate. He still struggles a lot with offspeed stuff, which is reflected in the high K rate. He was the Curve's main run-producer until he broke a finger and missed the last month. He played mainly 1B, which is probably the best spot for him as he's a liability even in LF. He's had a couple of knee injuries, which has probably affected both his running and defense. He's too old to be considered a prospect now. He had a chance during spring to win a job in AAA, but he got hurt. When he returns, he'll be either in AAA or AA.
