Like Brad Rea, Carlin was a NDFA whom the Pirates signed to fill in the holes created
by their lack of corner prospects. He holds Miami's all-time HR record. In his
senior year he hit 332/435/659, with 19 HRs, 36 BBs and 32 Ks. He also hit 19 HRs
his junior year. He was primarily an OF in college, but saw time at 1B and DH. He
split the 1B duties at Bradenton with Rea and struggled to hit despite being several
years older than most of the competition. He made considerable strides in 2004; he
was easily Williamsport's best power hitter and continued to show very good plate
discipline, while serving mainly as a DH. He was still old for the level, though,
and the Crosscutters gave more playing time to Tim Brown and, after he signed, Mike
Hofius, so it's clear that the Pirates don't regard Carlin as a prospect. He could
appear anywhere in class A in 2005, but was not on any full season roster to start
the season.
