Magness is one of several interesting minor league free agents the Pirates have signed for 2005. He's done very well at high A, with fairly good power and outstanding plate discipline, but so far he seems to have hit a wall at AA. He's still drawn a lot of walks in his two abbreviated chances at that level, and he's shown decent power, but he hasn't hit for average. He also seems to have gotten derailed partly by an injury in 2003. The Pirates assigned him initially to Lynchburg, where he'll have to compete for playing time at 1B and DH with Jon Benick and Brad Rea. He also may play some in LF.
