Rea set many hitting records at Pitt, then had a good year in independent ball.
He was a DH in college and most of the time in the indy league, so he's probably
not very good defensively. He split 1B duties with Mike Carlin for Bradenton in
2003. Excluding rehabbing players, he was the team's best hitter, but he was far
too old for the league and can't be considered a prospect. The Pirates under Dave
Littlefield have shown little interest in drafting and signing legitimate corner
players, so they've had to fill their 1B, DH and corner OF positions in the low
minors with NDFAs, of which Rea is one, or with non-prospects like Francis Poni
and Kelington Made shifting from other positions. Rea was the primary DH at
Hickory in 2004, appearing in only 30 games at 1B. He continued to hit for average
with passable plate discipline, but showed mainly doubles power despite being a
big guy. Given the absence of 1B prospects in the system's lower levels, he'll
serve in a 1B/DH role with Lynchburg in 2005.
