The Pirates drafted Johnson as a power hitter. He led junior colleges in HRs in 2004
and set a school RBI record, although BA did not rate him among Florida's top 65
prospects. He struggled in his debut. After hitting both of his HRs in one game
early in the season, he went into a slump and struggled to make contact. Toward the
end of the season he started to make better contact and get his average up, but he
didn't hit for much power and his final K rate was alarmingly high. The team kept
him in the lineup all year, so it obviously thinks he can turn it around. Johnson
runs well and is considered a very good athlete with a strong arm. None of the
hitters the Pirates drafted in the early rounds had good debuts. This isn't entirely
unusual for players getting their first exposure to pro ball and to wood bats, and
Johnson himself was considered raw when the Pirates drafted him. It's possible he'll
pick up the pace next year. He'll be at Hickory.
