The Pirates drafted Bocchino primarily because of his record in college of hitting
for high averages. He hit over .400 in each of his last three years, including
444/522/778 his last year. He started slowly at Williamsport in 2002 as he struggled
with the strike zone, but he finished strong. He started 2003 at Hickory, but seldom
played and didn't hit when he did. Back at Williamsport he had a strong seasonhe,
Nyjer Morgan and Craig Stansberry provided most of the team's offense over the last
six weeks or so. He spent all 2004 at Hickory as the 4th OF and had a good walk rate,
but didn't hit well enough overall. He isn't a slap hitter like Chaz Lytlehe has
gap power, but he's not likely ever to hit many HRs. Bocchino runs fairly well and has
played some CF, but is best suited to a corner. That's not so good given his lack of
power. He'll start 2005 in a backup role at Lynchburg.
