Boeve had a breakout season at Hickory, putting up big numbers across the board and
finishing 3rd in the SAL in HRs. He's especially unusual for a Pirate prospect since
Dave Littlefield took over the team in that he has both power and good patience at
the plate. There are two important caveats, though. The first is Hickory's park,
which is a strong hitters' park. It particularly played as a HR haven early in 2004,
as the Crawdads had a number of wild slugfests in the first couple months. The
second is Boeve's age, which was 24 as of mid-season. He didn't get started in pro
ball until he was 23, so it's not a question of him being more experienced than the
competition. He will need to prove he can perform at higher levels and to do so
quickly. His breakout was somewhat surprising. He hit 368/471/745 as a college
junior, with 18 HRs, 35 BBs and 41 Ks in 212 ABs. Nevertheless, scouts had some
doubt whether he'd hit for power. He didn't hit well in college summer ball and
showed no power at all then, so he's obviously made some adjustments. His hitting
was only fair in his first pro season, but he did start showing some power and drew
some walks. He managed to cut his K rate some in his second season. He's considered
to be a very good athlete with solid tools in all areas, and stole 29 bases in 31
tries as a junior. The Pirates came in for some criticism when they didn't promote
Boeve during the season. Their reason probably was that Hickory was headed for the
post-season, while Lynchburg was not. He'll be at Lynchburg to start 2005, but
hopefully he'll reach Altoona well before the end of the year.
