Buttler is a speedy OF who's had trouble advancing steadily. After struggling at Hickory in 2001, he returned there in 2002 and had a much better season. He had a nearly identical season at Lynchburg in 2003, but returned there and had a dismal, injury-plagued season in 2004. I don't know the extent to which the injury problems may have affected his performance. Prior to 2004, Buttler generally made good contact and had a marginal walk rate. He has some power, but not enough to make up for his merely decent OBP. In 2004, everything went backward, especially his plate discipline. He has very good speed, but he's played only the corners the last few years as he's not an especially good OF. He's beyond the stage where he can be considered a prospect. The Pirates probably concluded that his poor 2004 season resulted from injury problems, as he'll open 2005 as a backup at Altoona.
