Macia played in the DSL under the name Felix Severino, then was listed by the Pirates as Wanell Macia, then Wanell Severino, and now he's going by Wanell Macia again. Oddly, although his originally listed age wasn't correct, he turned out to be only a month older. He was transferred to Bradenton after two unimpressive seasons in the DSL, but improved in the GCL. He hit for a good average with some gap power, but had awful plate discipline. He continued to improve at Williamsport in 2004, hitting for more power and cutting his K rate almost in half, but he still won't take a walk. The fact that he's managed to improve while moving up in levels is a good sign, but he'll be facing an uphill battle as a relatively small corner OF who doesn't have great speed. He'll need to hit for still more power or get on base a great deal more often to be good enough offensively for a corner position. He also will be old for Hickory, which is where he'll open 2005 in a backup role.
