Powell is yet another of the Pirates' huge stock of small, speedy OFs, in his case
very speedy. Strictly a slap hitter, he hit for a good average in his first year,
but didn't walk much and showed no power. Back in the GCL for a second year, he
regressed, hitting for a lower average and striking out far too often. He got a
late season promotion to Lynchburg when the Hillcats ran short of bodies and the
Pirates didn't want to promote anybody from playoff-bound Hickory or from
Williamsport, which was trying to finish at .500. Powell's numbers at Lynchburg
look good as the result of a 5-for-5 day in the season finale. He has shown
outstanding base stealing ability, which will appeal to an organization like the
Pirates that prefers speed to hitting ability. A little surprisingly, he'll start
2005 as the regular CF at Hickory.
