Gonzalez was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team. Somewhat surprisingly,
the Bucs signed him rather than pursue him as a draft-and-follow. He's a small,
quick player, a commodity of which the Pirates are very fond. Due to tighter visa
restrictions that have been imposed in the past year, Gonzalez was unable to come
to the U.S. initially, so after he signed the Pirates sent him to play in the
Dominican, which is where he was born. He didn't hit much there, although he did
draw some walks. Oddly, considering that his speed was the primary reason for the
Pirates drafting him, he stole only one base. He should be in the GCL in 2005.
