Stansberry was a defensive standout in college, although not a particularly strong
hitter. He hit 309/386/434 in his last year with national champion Rice, although
he did show good plate discipline, with 35 BBs and 35 Ks in 272 ABs. His selection
was the second year in a row the Pirates' top college position player was a
defense-oriented player, the other being Taber Lee. Stansberry had a good debut as
Williamsport's 3B, as would be expected from a draftee coming from a major college
program. He hit with a little power, but had a somewhat low walk rate. In 2004,
the Pirates moved him from 3B, where he played his last year in college, to 2B, which
he had played previously. The move probably reflected the fact that the Pirates don't
expect him to hit well enough to play 3B. He started the season strongly, then got
hurt and slumped badly when he came back. He eventually got his BA back up, although
his power dropped off in the second half. His walk rate increased a great deal, as
did his K rate. As advertised, he's a very good defensive player. He'll start 2005
as the 2B at Lynchburg. By then he'll be 23, so if he's to stay on the prospect track
he'll need to adjust quickly and, ideally, be able to move up before the end of the
season.
