Chaves was drafted primarily for his glove. He struggled badly with the bat for two years. In 2003-04, however, he started hitting better all the way around, with a higher average, more walks, fewer Ks and even a little power. He started 2004 in an awful slump, then was starting to hit, and walk a great deal, when he tore up his knee and was lost for the season. Defensively he's very fluid and graceful, with excellent range and good hands. From what I've seen, he's better defensively than Taber Lee. If he's healthy in 2005, he could compete for, or share, the Altoona SS job with Lee. One of the two could end up as a UT IF. Chaves will be at a disadvantage, because he's a year older and, unlike Lee, was not a high draft pick of the current management.
