The Pirates acquired Furmaniak in a trade for David Ross. After being drafted in the 22nd round, Furmaniak established himself as a decent prospect due to versatility and decent pop in his bat. He's been primarily a SS until 2005, when he played 3B more than any other position, but he can play anywhere in the IF and reportedly is reasonably good with the glove. His hitting had slipped some by the time of the trade, mostly his batting average, as his power and walk rate remained about the same. He's never had good plate discipline. He could be useful to the Pirates as a UT guy, although Freddy Sanchez will likely stand in his way.
