The Pirates drafted Schwartzbauer because of his glove and signed him quickly. Oddly, they assigned him to Bradenton, where he was quite old for the level. He played 2B, 3B and SS, taking playing time away from younger players like Alexander Peralta and David Munoz. Schwartzbauer improved quite a bit with the bat his senior year, then was Bradenton's best hitter, although he was hitting against much younger competition. Given his reputation as an outstanding defensive player, he committed a surprising number of errors—9 in 35 games. He'll open 2005 in a UT role with Hickory.
