Lee entered the 2002 draft with a reputation as a very strong defensive player who
was unlikely to hit much. He has largely lived up to his billing. His one strength
on offense is that he draws walks, enough to maintain a good OBP. He actually was
hitting around .270 in the first half of 2003, but slumped in the second half.
Whether he'll be able to continue drawing walks at upper levels remains to be seen,
as the pitchers won't likely be afraid to throw him strikes. Lee's error total (28
in 115 games in 2003, 22 in 93 games in 2004) has been a little high for a player
with his defensive reputation, and he hasn't impressed me that much with his range,
hands or arm. He missed the last month of the 2004 season with a broken finger.
He'll share SS duties at Altoona in 2005 with Brandon Chaves. He probably doesn't
project as anything more than a defensive sub, which makes it puzzling why he was
such a high draft pick.
