Velandia is reputed to be a good defensive SS, but is not a good hitter. His lifetime BA of .143 is the lowest ever for any position player to appear in 150 or more games in the majors. He did reach the point, in 1998 and 2000, where he hit well in AAA, but it didn't last. He has had a good walk rate and has very occasional power, but overall does little at bat. With Jose Castillo, Freddy Sanchez and Bobby Hill all likely on the major league roster in 2005, the Pirates will have no middle IF prospects in the upper minors. Velandia will be in the mix at SS and/or 2B in AAA.
