Originally signed as a draft-and-follow, Cockrell has played consistently well but remained stuck in short season ball for three years, aside from brief appearances at higher levels as an injury fill-in. He showed good leadoff skills in his two seasons in the GCL, but his SB totals have dropped sharply. At Williamsport he started hitting for good power for a middle IF, although his walk rate dropped quite a bit. He started 2004 at Hickory, but struggled early and was returned to extended spring training. After filling in briefly at Altoona, he eventually ended up as Hickory's regular 3B. He had a very solid year there, increasing his power and getting his walk rate back up near respectability. It's possible the increased power and greatly decreased SB totals reflect him filling out. Cockrell has now spent significant time at 2B and 3B, and a little at SS. He's capable defensively; he committed only 7 errors in 84 games in the field at Hickory, which is a low total for that level. He'll be at Lynchburg, either playing 3B or serving as a UT player.
