Evans' career got derailed by injuries at the time when he needed to get established in the majors. He might ultimately have been a pretty decent player, as he had some power and good plate discipline. The Pirates signed him to fill in at Altoona when Kevin Nicholson and Yurendell DeCaster departed to play in the Olympics. He doesn't appear to have been playing in pro ball at the time. He hit well for Altoona, as would be expected from a player with his experience. Evans has signed to return in 2005. He was slated to open the season at AA, probably in a UT role, but he was suspended for 15 games for steroid use. He's expected to join the Curve after he's activated.
