Santiago had a respectable 2003 debut, hitting for decent average with some doubles.
Like almost all of the hitters on the organization's two short season teams since
Dave Littlefield took over as GM, he didn't show much patience. I saw him in minor
league camp in March 2004 and he appeared to be a good defensive player. Even
though Williamsport lacked a legitimate 3B, however, he started 2004 back in the
GCL. His hitting there was similar to 2003, but he was promoted to Williamsport
at mid-season and showed marked improvement, hitting for a high average with decent
power. He still doesn't walk much, but doesn't fan much, either. He'll open 2005
as the 3B at Hickory. He will have just turned 20, which isn't a bad age for that
level. Given the near-vacuum at 3B in the system, he should get plenty of
opportunity to advance.
