"The woods were dark as we met at Phil and Diane Merritt's land off of Unquomonk Road, and it was difficult to tell who all had come for the hike, but it was clear that it was a crowd of many ages, even if the moon had hidden itself behind a thick blanket of clouds. After a few words of orientation and precaution, the hike set off, showshoes creaking against the packed snow of the woods road.
Soon the trail left the road and wound its way up the sometimes steep side of Old Wolf Hill through a forest that changed from hardwoods to evergreens. Even overcast, the snow shed plenty of light to follow the trail and person in front of you. And as we neared the top, some three-quarters of an hour later, huffing a bit, the moon began to show her face. Teasing at first, in a game of peek-a-boo, she came out in full gown as we finally reached the Big View, where the campfire blazed and valley lay spread out below in a silver misty light.
Cookies and cider were offered. The hikers were joined by a few snowmobilers who came via another trail. We enjoyed the snacks and view before heading down a shorter trail, and back to our cars."
