Yngwie Malmsteen's Neoclassical Rock

Yngwie Malmsteen (pronounced Ing-Vay) is a Swedish born guitarist who came to America in the early 1980's. He set the rock world on its ear with his trademark neoclassical style, combining hard rock with classical elements such as from Bach and Paganini. His first solo album Rising Force was nominated for a Grammy in 1984. While many fans regard him as a virtuoso rock guitarist, Yngwie views himself more as a composer in the classical sense. He writes all the music for his band to play. Yngwie even wrote a complete instrumental Concerto he performed with a classical orchestra. He also plays bass guitar on all of his recordings. Yngwie's complete command of guitar and the music he plays has earned him the title of Maestro by his fans. There have been many guitarists adopting his style of playing ever since, but there is still only one Yngwie J. Malmsteen!

The first time I heard his music was in 1984, and I immediately knew it was something unique and fresh. The first song I had listened to was "Black Star" from his Grammy nominated Rising Force album. This song is a favorite of his fans so Yngwie always includes it in the encore performance of his live shows. His album Rising Force is considered the blueprint of his neoclassical rock guitar playing style and musical composition. Ever since then Yngwie's music has become my favorite to listen to. With anticipation I've always looked forward to all of his solo releases and Yngwie doesn't disappoint. He's inspired me, as an amateur self taught student of guitar, to challenge myself to think "out of the box" and learn new ways of playing while appreciating how he blends rock and classical music together. As Yngwie would say, Play Loud!

Steve meets Yngwie in 2004 On April 3, 2004 my dream to finally meet Yngwie came true! My wife Greta and I won a fan club member contest to meet with Yngwie on his tour bus after the show at Baltimore's Thunderdome rock club. We got to speak with Yngwie and his nice wife April, as well as keyboardist Joakim Svalberg and the famous rock bassist Rudy Sarzo! We took some pictures and Yngwie even autographed my Attack!! CD, which he was then on tour promoting. At the same time we also became friends with two other fan club contest winners, Pam and Tina. We met up again the following year when Yngwie came to Baltimore Maryland's Rams Head Live! on December 3, 2005 during his Unleash The Fury tour, and also at Springfield Virginia's Jaxx rock club on October 27, 2008 during his Perpetual Flame tour. We always have fun hanging out together at Yngwie's concerts and afterwards well into the early morning hours catching up with each other and talking about how great Yngwie's shows always are! I've met and spoken to many other Yngwie fans throughout the years which makes the experience complete and really bonds us together.

Many thanks goes to Anne who does an excellent job running Yngwie's Official Fan Club since the beginning. She may not realize the great impact she's made to Yngwie's fans though her loyal support. Running an official fan club for a major music artist like Yngwie Malmsteen is no small task and takes much personal time and dedication. She does a great service to Yngwie and that should not go unnoticed by his fans! Join the fan club today to get exclusive newsletters, read interviews with Yngwie, and enter fan club contests to win cool giveaways and Yngwie memorabilia.

About This Site

The purpose of this fan tribute site is to show my appreciation of Yngwie Malmsteen for the gift of music and inspiration he has given to all of us, and to share it with all of you. When I first started this site back in 1998, besides his official website, there wasn't that much presence around the Internet to help spread the word about Yngwie. Just like some others, I decided to create a website to educate people who've never heard about Yngwie Malmsteen before and show them what his music personally means to me.

So browse the various pages here to see: The body of work Yngwie has done over his long successful career. Listen to some fan created MIDI audio song interpretations so you can get a basic sense of Yngwie's style, and even try singing along with the lyrics if you like. Read some fan written show reviews and their experiences meeting Yngwie. Maybe even take in some free "exclusive" video guitar lessons based on his style of playing, and download some great fan created guitar tabs too.

After you get to listen his album recordings and watch his videos, you will become an Yngwie fan too. Above all, make sure that you get to see a live Yngwie show so you can experience this living guitar legend for yourself!
