BACKGROUND

Autocross is a form of automotive competition emphasizing precision driving and car control in which one car at a time negotiates a set course in the shortest possible time. A mini-road course is set up with pylons on large unobstructed, paved area such as a mall parking lot or airport tarmac. Cars are placed into one of many classes - Stock, Street Prepared, Prepared, Modified - based on performance potential. Entrants get 3-6 timed runs through the 40-70 second course which has maneuvers like slaloms, chicanes, and hairpin turns. A driver's fastest time through the course plus penalties for any displaced pylons equals his score. The top scorers in each class, which may be separated by only thousandths of a second, receive trophies. This is a safe and inexpensive test of driving ability most often using one's everyday car. These events are also known for the friendship and comradary among the participants.

SampleCourse

Autocrosses are held throughout the year usually on Sundays. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) sanctions most autocrosses calling them Solo Events. The Buccaneer Region SCCA holds 11 events per year in the Jacksonville FL area.
