Eudora is another popular alternative email to Microsoft's Outlook/Outlook Express. I haven't used it much myself, but a lot of people seem to like it quite a bit.

Foxmail is an excellent alternative to Outlook Express. Loaded with features, such as easy use of multiple POP3 accounts, checking of Hotmail accounts as if they were POP3 accounts, built-in address book, the Remote Mailbox where you can see your mail on the server before you download it and delete spam before it ever gets downloaded, and much more, along with full read/write support for HTML email (version 4 and higher). It also contains all of it's files in one folder, so if you have to reinstall Windows, you won't need to reinstall Foxmail. Excellent for multi-boot Windows systems, since no matter what OS you're in, your mail is always there. Easily imports your Outlook Express email. Also now supports (version 4 and higher) outgoing (SMTP) authentication. Runs on Win95 and up.

Mozilla is the now discontinued (see Mozilla Seamonkey below) open source browser/email client/HTML editor package that Netscape 6/7 is based on. Loaded with many excellent features, such as pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, and more. It looks nearly identical to Netscape 7, and has most of the same features along with a couple extras, but is more up to date with security fixes. Excellent browser and email if you have a decent system, although I'd recommend switching to Seamonkey now that this has been discontinued by Mozilla.org.

Now that the original Mozilla is no longer being updated by Mozilla.org (aside from security fixes), fans of the original have joined to continue it's development and improvement under the name Seamonkey. It's pretty much the same as the original Mozilla, just with a new name and a few nice new features. Now that version 1.0 has been released, I've replaced my previous Mozilla 1.7.12 install with it. Definitely nice to see this project continuing, as I've always preferred the original Mozilla over Firefox/Thunderbird/Nvu, and was highly disappointed to see it being discontinued.

Nvu is a stand-alone WYSIWYG web page editor (no browser or email) based of Mozilla Composer. Unlike Firefox and Thunderbird, this project isn't run by Mozilla, but is instead a project by the same people who make the Linspire operating system (formerly Lindows). They advertise it as "The complete Web Authoring System for Desktop Linux", but they provide a Windows version as well, which I've found to be a great program. This is an excellent program, whether you are new to HTML and web pages, or are an experienced user who likes the ease of creating basic page elements with an editor, while being able to switch to source editing and/or previewing with a single click. Also a great companion product if you're using Firefox and Thunderbird, or are using other browsing and email programs.

I wasn't a big fan of older versions of Netscape, but 7 is pretty nice. It's based on Mozilla, and has most of the same features, along with some extras, like the integrated AOL Instant Messenger/ICQ client, and ability to use Netscape Mail addresses in the Mail program, allowing for HTML formatted messages and easy saving of messages to local folders. Other than the Netscape mail features, the biggest difference between Netscape and Mozilla is mostly just the name and logo. (along with Mozilla being open source) Performance between the two is about the same, from what I can tell, but the download size is considerably larger for Netscape (unless you grab the base install). Unless you need the Netscape Mail features, you'd probably be better off going with Mozilla or Seamonkey instead, since they have security fixes that are not present in Netscape 7.2.

As for Netscape 8, it's a newer, browser-only product based on Firefox. Has most of the Firefox features, along with a few other things, like a somewhat different interface.

Okay sure, that's an official description, but I agree with every word of it. It's an excellent browser, fast, small, and loaded in features, along with the best crash recovery I've seen in a browser. It's by far my favorite browser, and I'd definitely recommend it over anything else, particularly for older systems. (Opera 6.06 runs well on my Pentium 133Mhz)

And now, as of Opera 8.5, it's completely free, with no ad banners or registration fees of any kind!

Opera 7.x and older also had versions that included Java, but if you already have Java installed on your system, you can just grab the (smaller) non-java version.
