...2005
updates.
12/30/05 - Added download links for OpenOffice 2.0.1 to the MS Office Alternatives page (in the Win95-XP section, under Office Tool downloads). Also added a link for the MS Word Viewer 2003 to the Office Tool downloads section (don't know why I never thought of that before). 12/04/05 - Added download link for Firefox 1.5 to the 32-bit internet tools page. Also updated the title links on that page for Mozilla, Firefox, and Thunderbird to point to the correct locations. 11/24/05 - Added download link for Opera 8.51 to the 32-bit internet tools page. 11/10/05 - Minor update, just added new desktop screenshots, since the others were severely outdated. 11/03/05 - Added download links for Winamp 5.11 to the Win 95-XP section, and for Netscape 8.0.4 to the 32-bit internet tools section. 10/20/05 - Added download links for the new OpenOffice 2.0 to the MS Office Alternatives page (in the Win95-XP section). 09/30/05 - Added a link to the OpenOffice 2.0 RC1 download page and download links for OpenOffice 1.1.5 to the MS Office Alternatives page (in the Win95-XP section). Also added the download link for Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.7 to the 32-bit Internet Tools page. 09/22/05 - Added download links for Netscape 8.0.3.3, Firefox 1.0.7, Mozilla 1.7.12, and Opera 8.5 to the 32-bit Internet Tools page in the Win95-XP section. On the subject of Opera 8.5, as of that version, it's now completely free! No ad banners, no fees, no registration of any kind. 100% free. I'm pretty thrilled with this, since the biggest reason why I hear people say they don't want Opera is now completely gone. If you've never tried Opera before, or have been avoiding it because of the ads, I'd highly recommend checking it out now. It's by far the best and fastest browser I've ever used. http://www.opera.com 09/03/05 - Added download links for Winamp 5.1 to the Win 95-XP section, and I've removed the Opera ad button from the pages. I also divided the old update text section into separate pages for each year, since it was getting a bit oversized. 08/31/05 - Due to Opera's 10th aniversary celebration, they are temporarily giving out free registration codes for Opera! Don't know how long it'll last, but you can try it here: http://my.opera.com/community/party/reg.dml As result, I now have a legal registration code for ad-free Opera, and won't need to wait for 250 clicks on the affiliate button. Since it's not needed anymore, I'll be removing that Opera ad shortly. Thanks a bunch to all who helped with it. And thanks to Oleg of the forums for bringing this up. 08/24/05 - Fixed broken links for the Windows 3.1 high color 98/XP icon packs, and updated a couple things on the systems page. (new video card, woo!) 08/18/05 - Added download link for Opera 3.60 to the 16-bit internet tools page (under Windows 3.1x). Also fixed a few broken navigation links on various pages. By the way, thanks to those who have clicked that Opera ad on the left. Still a decent amount to go before hitting the required number, but it's getting there. 08/05/05 - Added a link to "What Works and What Doesn't in Microsoft Virtual PC" in the Win 95-XP section. Also, now that the Win9x section has been expanded to cover 95-XP, I've moved many of the links from the Misc. Computer Related section to the 95-XP section. The Misc. section is pretty small now as result, but I hope to add more to it eventually, possibly along the lines of things like computer related articles, news, resources, etc., things that wouldn't generally go in the other sections, and maybe some other non-Windows related things (such as Linux related resources). 08/04/05 - Added download links for Mozilla 1.7.11 (bugfix release) to the 32-bit Internet Tools page. Also, I've been looking into making a few changes to get this website to display correctly, (or at least close) in Netscape 4.x, which it currently looks horrible in. I know what needs to be done, but it may be a while before I get it taken care of. I do eventually intend to get it working in Netscape 4 though, since some users of the older systems that sections of this site target may still be using it, and because it won't affect the way the site looks in other browsers once it's done. 07/30/05 - Added links to the MDGx Max Speeed Windows Tricks and Secrets website and the Windows 3.1/DOS 6.xx section of the Max Speeed website to the Windows 95-XP and 3.1x sections (respectively). 07/29/05 - Added download links for Winamp 5.094 to the Win 95-XP section (multimedia downloads). 07/27/05 - Added download links for Opera 8.02 in the 32-bit Internet Tools page. 07/24/05 - The website redesign I mentioned a few days ago has been completed. The layout of most things should still be pretty much the same, but I've gotten rid of the frames (which I probably should never have used in the first place) added some extra navigation links to the left side that should make it a little easier to find things, and changed the Windows 95/98/ME section to include NT4/2000/XP as well, since much of that section's content applies to those systems as well. Eventually if I end up having enough NT4/2000/XP specific content, I may split it into two sections. I've also gone through and fixed or removed any broken links and downloads from the pages, and I fixed a couple recently introduced errors that broke the W3C standards compliance. Things should also look the same now in all supported browsers (previously things were a little off in Internet Explorer). Hopefully things should look better, be easier to navigate, and be less annoying overall (no more pages opening in new windows to get out of the frames, no more problem trying to bookmark a particular page, etc.) than the previous frames layout. 07/22/05 - I've mentioned it before, but I'm a big fan of the Opera web browser. I like nearly everything about it, so the text ads at the top don't bother me much, although I wouldn't mind having them gone. Read more... 07/21/05 - Added the download link to the Internet Tools page for Mozilla 1.7.10, which fixes the same flaws in the Mozilla suite as were recently fixed in Firefox and Thunderbird with the 1.0.5/6 releases. 07/20/05 - Added the download links for Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 and Thunderbird 1.0.6 in the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). Also, I may be making some changes to the design and layout of the website soon. I haven't decided what I'll be doing exactly, but my intention is to get rid of the frames while keeping the design pretty much the way it is now. Not sure when this will be happening, but it should be fairly soon. 07/13/05 - Added the download links for Mozilla Firefox 1.0.5 and Thunderbird 1.0.5 in the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). Also, patches have been released for some new critical flaws in Windows, so Windows users might want to make sure your systems are up to date. 07/11/05 - Fixed the broken link for the Netscape Download Archive in the NT 3.51 and Internet Tools pages (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). 07/07/05 - Updated the desktops and systems pages with info and screens of the Linux distro I've been playing around with recently. Also made a few behind the scenes changes to the site's HTML (fixed some font issues when viewed in Linux, although things are still smaller than they should be when viewed with Firefox in Linux). 07/02/05 - Outdated links in the DOS, Win 3.1x, Win 9x, and Misc. sections for Lightspeed's Reference Page, Lightspeed's Win95 Page, and the Powerload Resource Pages have all been updated. 06/30/05 - Okay, so that took a bit longer than I had expected. Ran into some delays, but the new permanent addresses for the website and forums are now up and running. The website is now located at http://www.freaked.org, and the forums are now located at http://forum.freaked.org. Should be a bit easier to remember than some of the weird addresses we've had in the past. Be sure to update your bookmarks and links. Also, the contact email address on the left has been updated to reflect the new domain. And on the subject of site updates, the download link for Nvu 1.0 has been added to the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). 06/18/05 - Updated the desktops and systems pages, which were a bit outdated (especially the desktops). 06/17/05 - Wasn't able to get to it quite as quickly as I'd planned to, but the main site has now been updated to match the color scheme of the new forums. Feel free to post any comments or suggestions here. The new permanent addresses for the site and forums should hopefully be ready by Monday. Also, download links for Winamp 5.09 Full and Lite have been added to the Win 9x page (multimedia section), and the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections) has been updated with download links for Opera 8.01 (details) and Netscape 8.02 (details). 06/07/05 - Lots of new stuff happening! First off, the new forums, now partnered with OSForum.org, have officially launched. I'm working on getting a permanent address set up for the forums, as well as a new, easier to remember address for the main site, which both should be up within a few days. Until then the new forums can be accessed at http://freaked.oldos.org. Be sure to check the freaked discussion section for more info and updates. The forums now have the new darker color scheme, and the main site will be updated to match within the next few days. Also, speaking of the main site, Jay, admin of OldOS.org & OSForum.org, is now providing web hosting for the freaked website, which means everything should run considerably faster and more smoothly than before. I'll still be keeping the secondary server around as a backup mirror, but the main address (and the new address, once it's up) will point to the new server. Thanks again to Jay! And on one other minor note, I've added a couple new affiliate buttons to the left side in place of the links that were previously on the old forums. 05/29/05 - I've posted some info about the changes that will be happening to the forums soon. Click here for the details. 05/27/05 - Added download link for Netscape 8.0.1 to the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). 05/24/05 - The Windows NT 3.51 section has been updated with a new download for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5. I didn't realize this, but an emailer let me know (thanks!) that to get OE5 working in NT 3.51, all you have to do is delete the CAB containing the dialer (stacknd.cab) before installing. You'll get one error, but everything else, including OE5, will install correctly. The download now available already has this file removed, so you can just extract and install. I've also added download links for the IE 5 and IE 4 128-bit encryption packs (the same as are available from the 16-bit Internet Tools page). 05/12/05 - Okay, so it was a little longer than a few days. Anyway, I've updated/added the download links for Mozilla 1.7.8, Firefox 1.0.4, and Nvu 1.0PR (Preview Release), as well as the old Nvu 0.17 for the heck of it, in the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). I've also added the download for the final version of MOD4Win 2.40, a nice freeware .MOD/.XM (among others) format player, to the Windows 3.1x section, and download links for and info about using Opera 5.12, 5.02, and Internet Explorer/Outlook Express 4 (including info on using OE4 with IE5) to the Windows NT 3.51 section. Also, keep an eye out for info coming soon about some changes to the forums in the near future. 04/23/05 - Updated/added the download links for the new Opera 8.0, Mozilla 1.7.7, and Firefox 1.0.3 in the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). I posted a short opinion of the new Opera 8.0 in the forums, which can be found here for those interested. Also updated the MS Office Alternatives page (again in the Win 9x and Misc. sections) with downloads for version 1.1.4 and links to check out the 2.0 Beta and NeoOffice (based on OpenOffice) for Mac. I also may have one or two things to add to the NT 3.51 section within the next few days. 03/26/05 - Updated the download links for Mozilla 1.7.6, Firefox 1.0.2, and Thunderbird 1.0.2 in the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). 03/13/05 - A newer, longer, Star Wars Episode III trailer was released recently. For those who haven't seen it, you can check it out here. 03/11/05 - Added a download link for Nvu 0.9 to the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). Also noticed recently that Mozilla is offcially discontinuing the original Mozilla Suite. (story, official article) Pretty disappointing to me, since the suite is still one of my favorite applications (and I don't really care much for Firefox and Thunderbird, although I'd use them long before Internet Explorer and Outlook Express), containing my second favorite browser right after Opera. (in fact, I've been using Netscape 7.2 lately [which is based on Mozilla 1.7.2] just because I like it quite a bit and was in the mood for something different for a while) I guess I'd better get my fill of Netscape 7.2/Mozilla 1.7.x while I can, since these (Netscape 7.2 & Mozilla 1.7.6) will be the last new versions. There are plans for development of the suite to be taken over by the community that's interested in it, which Mozilla.org has said they would support, but who knows if that will work out for sure. 03/04/05 - Something I've been meaning to do for a while, I've just finished going through the entire site cleaning up some of the messy code. It's still not brilliant (since I'm not particularly knowledgable in HTML), but it's a decent amount cleaner and more efficent that it was previously, and the entire site is now fully W3C compliant. A couple minor things might look slightly different now, but the overall layout should look pretty much the same. Feel free to contact me if you notice any problems. 03/03/05 - I've added a link for the new Netscape 8.0 Beta browser to the Internet Tools page (in the Win 9x and Misc. sections). I also posted my opinion in the forums after having messed with it a little bit, click here to read it or give an opinion of your own. 02/28/05 - An update! (although a minor one) Can you believe it? Yes, for you three or four regular visitors who may have been wondering, I still maintain this website. I just haven't had a lot of time to mess with it lately, and I haven't had a lot of luck in coming up with things to add to it. This place started out over three years ago (wow, didn't realize until now that it's really been that long...) as mostly a site with links and resources for DOS and Windows 3.1, but there really isn't much to add for those systems, since they are nearly dead. I've considered adding more for newer versions of Windows, but there are already countless (better) sites around with info and resources for those, so there really doesn't seem to be much point to adding things that can be easily found on any other site. So I currently don't really do a lot with the site (which doesn't help with site traffic), other than leaving it up for those who want the DOS/Windows 3.1x links and downloads, and making some minor updates now and then. I may eventually do more with it, or I may someday eventually close it down. I haven't really decided on anything permanent yet, and probably won't for a while. I still kind of like having the site around, and would like to do more with it, so it probably won't be going away any time soon. But in the mean time there isn't a lot happening to encourage visitors to come by, either. (unless you happen to like that CNET news thing on the side quite a bit ) On the brighter side, the forums
have shown a slight increase in activity lately, which is always nice
to see. I'd actually prefer to see the forums grow into a community,
and have the website be mostly a gateway to the forums, with some
updates here and there. But the forums have some of the same problems
has the main website, so it's not too likely that'll happen very soon.
If you have a chance, drop by the forums some time. It's
always nice to see new people around.Blah, that turned into a bit of a whiney rant, when it was intended to just be a bit of an explanation. Enough of that, as for the actual small update, I added a link for the website Windows ME Fixes to the Windows 95/98/ME section. It has several useful tips for those running Windows ME. (some of which may be useful to Windows 98 users as well) I've also updated the Internet Tools page with downloads for Opera 7.54u2, Opera 8 Beta 2, and Nvu versions 0.7 and 0.81. Also, I've had Gran Turismo 4 for about five days now, and am absolutely THRILLED with it. I rambled a
little about it here,
for anyone interested.01/27/05 - The server running the script that shows the news headlines on the right changed a few things, so I've updated things to work correctly again. |
