Saturday, May 16, 1998 - York and back to London

Today we are in York - it would be unthinkable not to come here if in Yorkshire (or so the books say).  First stop was the York Minster - very large and impressive with a rich history.  We took a guided tour and were told many interesting things, too many to note here.  Then we walked along part of the Roman walls, fortified by others later.  The streets are crowded and have lots of shops - but we don’t have time for shopping.  The Merchant Adventurer’s Hall was boring but outside, there were two families of geese with goslings of different ages in each family.  They were very cute, all of the little ones eating the grass while their parents watched over them..

Clifford’s Tower was interesting with good views of two chocolate factories.  These British sure do love their candy.  On the way down the street, we came across Fairfax House and went inside.  It was a very good example of Georgian architecture and furniture.  I bought a small clear vase that lays on the table with room for only a few flowers that the cats can’t knock over.

Lunch of steak pie for me and Yorkshire pudding with chicken for Neal at The Little John.  Pretty good for 9 pounds in a tourist town.  The weather is still perfect - sunny, clear and warm, just like yesterday - still no rain!

We stayed in York until about 2:40 pm and then drove south on the M1 towards London.  It was an easy drive that took about 3.5 hours.  Stopped in Windsor to find a room and couldn’t see any B&B signs.  There was some horse show going on so everything was probably full anyway.  We kept driving to Datchet and only saw one hotel, which turned out to be full.  The young woman working at the desk referred us to another small hotel that was half the price and accepted Visa - but it was not an very nice hotel.  Oh, well, it’s only one night.  We drove down the road to Slough to eat dinner at a place called Wetherspoon.  It wasn’t very exciting either.

I am very scared to be left alone tomorrow and wish someone would be with me.  I miss Saucy so much and know that I’ll miss Neal even more.  I’m just going to have to keep busy for nine days and it will be over before I know it.
