Food For Thought

"If slaughterhouses had glass
walls, everyone would be a vegetarian." ~Paul McCartney
"Recognize meat for what it really is: the
antibiotic- and pesticide-laden corpse of a tortured animal." ~Ingrid Newkirk
"Truly man is the king of beasts, for his
brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial
places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will
come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on
the murder of men." ~Leonardo da Vinci
Would you kill your pet dog or cat to
eat it? How about an animal you're not emotionally attached to?
Is the thought of slaughtering a cow or chicken or pig with your own hands too
much to handle?
Instead, would hiring a hit-man to do the job give you enough distance from the
emotional discomfort?
What animal did you put a contract out on for your supper last night?

"Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of
compassion to embrace
all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty."
"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life
on earth
as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."
~Albert
Einstein, physicist, Nobel 1921
"Vote Hemp seeks the full normalization of and a free market for industrial hemp in America. Vote Hemp's mission is to educate consumers, business owners, farmers and legislators about the many benefits of industrial hemp and to mobilize voters to elect pro-hemp politicians. Hemp is one of the few issues on the national debate that enjoys tremendous bipartisan and cross-cultural support. Democrats and Libertarians, Greens and Republicans, farmers and hippies, global corporations and small mom-and-pop businesses are all part of the broad coalition in favor of industrial hemp."

...A Little Big Bamboo History... By Zina Tane
Why the Giraffe? Totems have a funny way of finding people. For us, it all started when we lived at The Notch. The Notch itself was a magical place where many people gathered to play music and make memories. Freedom of expression was the fuel and creativity was the energy. After a 1999 spring storm, a rather large limb had fallen off one of the crabapple trees and we were going to cut it up for lengths to burn in the wood stove. While flipping it over to get it into a cutting position, we were startled to see the image of a deer appear. With a little help from my chainsaw and some weeds for a tail, a sculpture was born! We placed it on our front lawn for everyone to enjoy. Unfortunately someone enjoyed it too much and after a few weeks, it disappeared. But the seed was planted and the next time a storm gave us a large branch from the horse chestnut tree we turned it around looking for another shape to be born and that shape was a giraffe! Again, with a little help from my chainsaw we were able to create a sturdy 9 foot statue that graced our lawn (in our backyard this time) and amazed visiting Notchers. From there it was an easy path to incorporate giraffes into our promotions and into our lives. When we got married we received all shapes and sizes of giraffes which added to our own growing collection. We like to think that the giraffe found a home with us because we were use to sticking our necks out to welcome so many people to The Notch and into the creative world we promoted. When we moved to Killingworth we were going to leave the giraffe in it's native habitat but our friend Frankie A. wouldn't hear of it. With his help we hoisted the sculpture onto the back of his pickup and with a lot of cushioning and careful driving we brought it to Tane Lane. It's getting a little rickety and probably won't last much longer, but we know that when it finally returns to the earth it's legacy will continue on for as long as we all remember.
UPDATE: The giraffe sculpture did finally collapse and has decomposed. We planted a burning bush shrub to commemorate it.

In all history there is no war which was not hatched by the governments,
the governments alone, independent of the interests of the people,
to whom
war is always pernicious even when successful.
Leo Tolstoy, author (1828-1910)
He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has
already earned my contempt.
He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would
surely suffice.
This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once.
Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble
war is;
I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action.
It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of
murder.
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
