Review

After absolutely falling in love with the werewolf movie Ginger Snaps, I could not wait to see the sequel.  So I rented it (and eventually bought it) and sat down.  When the credits started to roll I was left with rather mixed feelings.  Having loved the first installment in this now trilogy of werewolf films, I really wanted to like it.  But after a second viewing disappointment set in.

The film stars out great, with another stylish opening credits sequence that featured a great blend of zooms, strange lighting effects, a great industrial theme, flashbacks, and sound bites from the first film.  It does a great job setting an eerie tone for the film.  After the opening credits the film wastes no time, jumping right into an excellent werewolf attack. But after the first 15 - 30 minutes the movie just seems to go down hill.

There are a lot of things in Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed that I just didn't like at all.  I didn't like the fact that Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) returns in a series of strange apparitions to younger sister Brigitte (Perkins).  To me it seemed like a last ditch effort to get Ginger in the movie.  I found it unnecessary because because the movie is strong enough with only Brigitte.  Another thing about the movie I didn't really care for was that there were to many scenes that made no fucking sense to me.  Mainly the masturbation scene, what and the fuck does that have to do with anything in this movie? Nothing.

As far as acting goes, Emily Perkins (ain't she gorgeous?)  was the movie for me, she manages to take the role of Brigitte to an entire new level.  Her emotions are dead on and she carries the entire weight of the movie on her own.

We get a few new characters in Unleashed, but sadly they aren't very good ones.  The character of Ghost (Maslany) is one of the worst characters ever.  I find my self hating her more and more as the film goes on.  Her gangly presence ruins the mood of the film.  Her written dialogue is laughable.  The constant rhyming, and strange, sometimes random jibber jabber bullshit had me gag reflex kicking into overdrive.  It isn't that it was a bad job as far as acting goes, Maslany did what she could with the role, which is respectable, but it just wasn't an overall good character.  Although I did find it funny as hell when she started to pet her dead dogs severed head.  The other main new character is Tyler, the dispisable man nurse at the clinic.  He is an absolute ass, and I did not like him one bit.

I also didn't care for the half assed bond between Brigitte and Ghost, which can be blamed for by my scorn for Ghost's character.  And the ridiculous implied molestation thing involving Ghost and Tyler.  It was just too far out there and frankly, uncalled for.

With so much bad being said about Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, there are some good things.  I really liked the idea of being trapped in a clinic while there is a werewolf looking for you.  The directing was very enjoyable, with clevar angles and zooms.  The soundtrack is a great addition, I really found myself getting into the industrial sound of it.  Also I liked that the wolf that was after Brigitte wants to mate with her.  Which made me wonder: Is the wolf that is after her Jason Macardy, who was infected by Ginger in part one.  Nothing was said about this but I think that it is quite possible, and would have been a really good addition to the film if the idea of this was explored.

So when it is all said and done, and the credits roll, we are left with a semi good sequel to an excellent movie.  If you liked the first one, I would suggest checking this out.

Gore

We get some bloody werewolf attacks, quick flashes of mangled and mutilated bodies, and a dog head. Plus lots more, yummy.
