Return of the Living Dead is a breath of fresh air to the zombie genre.
It blends unrelenting terror with comedy and even brings new ideas to the
genre. Watching this film now is like a blast from the past (even
though it is before my time). The soundtrack, references, and fashion
are all dated, but it really adds to the loveable quality that Return of
the Living Dead has. The characters in the movie are great. James
Karen does a wonderful job as Frank. He comes across as a very
likeable character, and does a great job transforming into a Zombie.
The same can be said for Clu Gulager who plays Bert. My least
favorite character was Suicide, to me he just seemed to be overacted.
The movie has several memorable scenes. My favorite is the dead
rising scene, it is a classic scene that would inspire all zombie films
that would come out after it. Another scene worth mentioning is the
scene where they are talking to the strapped down zombie. It brings
back memories of the first time I saw this flick when I was 10 years old,
it always sent chills down my spine and had me reaching for a blanket.
Also, Return of the Living Dead can be given credit for the idea that
zombies need to eat brains.
So over all, Return of the Living Dead is a hands down classic in my
book, and an absolute must see film for all genre fans. |
