Lucio Fulci has done it again, the cult Italian director has managed to
create another masterpiece of horror. Zombie is one of the greatest
zombie films ever, and for good reason. It contains all of the key
elements that make a good zombie film; tons of gruesome gore effects,
great zombie makeup, amazing directing, and maybe even a little nudity.
Fulci is a master at directing, and zombie contains all of his
signature trademarks that have given him his cult status. Lots of
really great and clever angels can be found, also amazing zooms. As
always Fulci likes to zoom in on his gore effects just to make the viewer
feel uncomfortable. Fulci also does a wonderful job at building the
suspense before a kill. He takes his time, and it works like a
charm, like always. I also noticed some techniques that I haven't
really seen him use in his other films as much. One of those is that
he uses a lot of really good peering shots in Zombie, it really gave the
film a sense of space that I really enjoyed. Another thing I would
like to mention about Zombie is the sequence where the zombies were coming
out of the ground. I really dug the POV shots with the dirt on the
lens, great little addition.
I have decided that I am not going to really comment on the acting in
Zombie, because it is English dubbed and it wouldn't really be fair to
judge. But the dubbing was actually pretty good.
This film contains the best looking zombies that I have ever seen.
Not only do they look amazing, they are so convincing in the way that they
move that it makes the movie all the creepier. The movie very slow,
and always seem to be looking towards the ground. Also it seems like
their eyes are closed on some of the close ups, truly amazing.
Now I can't write a review for Lucio Fulci's Zombie without mentioning
that scene, you know the one I'm talking about. The scene that
practically has it's own cult following. That's right I am talking
about none other than the zombie fighting the shark. The sequence is so
genius that it is amazing that it hadn't already been done. The best
part about it is that the zombie that fought the shark was actually played
by the sharks trainer. It truly has to be seen to be believed.
As in all of Fulci's film, we get a creepy as hell soundtrack, that
fits the movie like a glove. All of the music is dead on accurate to
the scenes and we even get some other stuff that is kind of silly to go
along with it. Absolutely perfect.
Now with their being so much good to say about the film, I only have
one complaint. I didn't really like the fact that the scene where
the doctor shoots the zombie in the head seemed to be used three or four
times. I don't know if it was the same clip for each shooting, or if
they were all incredibly similar. Either way it was kind of a
disappointment. But that is really the only negative thing I can
really say about the movie.
So with amazing looking zombies, classic Fulci directing, a great
soundtrack, tons of gore, and the shark scene, Zombie is a classic zombie
film that is sure to please everyone. Go out and buy this movie,
don't even bother renting it! |

The gore is everywhere in this one, we get a gruesome bit off cheek,
graphic bullet holes, severed hand, two nasty bites to the
jugular (accompanied by zoom ins), an eyeball disaster that will make
you want to get a pair of safety glasses, more bloody bullet wounds, a
wicked smashed head, and so much more. ALL YOU CAN EAT! |
